This 10-day Rwanda itinerary is not something I designed on paper; it’s a journey I know deeply because I have guided it many times with real clients. As a freelance guide in Rwanda and the East African Region, I’ve taken couples, families, friends, solo travelers, and honeymooners through this exact route, working with different tour companies, including Huza Gateway. Over time, it naturally became the itinerary I trust most and confidently recommend to anyone wanting to experience Rwanda properly in 10 days.
One of the strongest confirmations of this route came from Judith and Clauger, who booked through Huza Gateway and traveled with me on this journey. They loved the balance and flow of the experience so much that after their trip, they personally recommended it to other travelers, and I later had the chance to guide two more clients they referred on the same itinerary. That kind of recommendation only happens when a trip truly works on the ground.
What makes this itinerary special is how well it fits different travel styles. It combines wildlife safaris, chimpanzee and gorilla trekking, cultural encounters, and relaxed time by Lake Kivu without rushing or exhausting drives. Because I’ve guided this route repeatedly, I know where to slow down, where to add value, and how to adapt it for different clients. What you’re reading here is a real journey, real routes, and a real guiding experience.

Day by Day Rwanda Safari Experience
Day 0: Arrival in Kigali – Welcome to Rwanda
Firstly, your journey begins in Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and safest capitals. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, I personally welcome clients or coordinate a smooth private transfer to the hotel. On this first day, therefore, the focus is on resting, adjusting, and preparing for the adventure ahead.
Overnight: Kigali
Day 1: Kigali City Tour & Journey to Akagera National Park
We begin the day with a guided Kigali city tour to explore Rwanda’s past, present, and resilience. During the tour, we visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, cultural spaces, and creative hubs — tailored to client interests.
In the afternoon, we then drive east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park. Upon arrival, we enjoy a gentle introductory game drive, followed by a sunset boat safari on Lake Ihema, where travelers often see hippos, crocodiles, and birds up close.
Overnight: Akagera National Park
Day 2: Hot Air Balloon Safari & Wildlife Viewing in Akagera
This is an early but unforgettable start. The hot air balloon safari over Akagera offers breathtaking sunrise views of the park’s plains, lakes, and wildlife. After a bush breakfast, we continue with a game drive searching for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, and more.
Later in the day, we return to Kigali at a relaxed pace.
Overnight: Kigali
Day 3: Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park
We head south through Rwanda’s scenic countryside toward Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. Along the way, we stop at the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza, offering insight into Rwanda’s royal history and traditions.
Overnight: Nyungwe area
Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk – Transfer to Lake Kivu
An early start for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest. Tracking these energetic primates in the wild is exciting and very different from gorilla trekking — fast-paced and full of sound.
In the afternoon, we enjoy the famous canopy walk, suspended above the rainforest. Later, we drive west to Lake Kivu, where the atmosphere slows down completely.
Overnight: Lake Kivu (Kibuye)
Day 5: Lake Kivu Boat Ride & Transfer to Rubavu
The morning is spent on a boat ride on Lake Kivu, including a guided hike to Napoleon Island, known for fruit bats and birdlife. After lunch, we continue north to Rubavu (Gisenyi) for a short city tour and a sunset fishermen experience along the lakeshore.
Overnight: Rubavu
Day 6: Lake Kivu Leisure Day
This day is intentionally unstructured. Clients can relax by the lake, swim, enjoy the beach, or choose optional activities like kayaking. Families, couples, and honeymooners especially appreciate this slower pace before the next adventure.
Overnight: Rubavu
Day 7: Rubavu to Musanze – Culture & Conservation
We drive toward Musanze, near Volcanoes National Park. Along the way and in the afternoon, we explore a tea plantation, visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, and learn about gorilla conservation at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund / Ellen DeGeneres Campus.
Overnight: Musanze
Day 8: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
This experience represents the highlight for most travelers. After an early morning briefing, we enter Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorilla trekking. During the trek, spending one hour with a gorilla family in the wild is emotional, powerful, and unforgettable, something I never tire of witnessing alongside clients.
Overnight: Musanze
Day 9: Musanze to Kigali
We return to Kigali through Rwanda’s green hills and volcanic landscapes. The afternoon and evening are free for rest, shopping, or a relaxed final dinner.
Overnight: Kigali
Day 10: Departure
Depending on flight times, clients enjoy last-minute souvenir shopping before being transferred to Kigali International Airport.
